Curriculum
In our Christian environment each child will develop socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually. Our curriculum program uses a thematic approach and uses Creative Curriculum, which is an early childhood education, research based curriculum. Each monthly theme is broken down into weekly themes that are reinforced in various centers in the room in which the children can play and learn. Centers consist of language, creative dramatics, music, large motor, science, art, block building and cognitive/manipulative activities. Our program strives to meet all the Iowa Early Learning Standards for early childhood education.
Time to Play
We believe that play time is crucial. Play is the children's work and children work real hard playing at preschool. When children play with purpose they learn about themselves and the world around them.
Children are
given time to play at preschool. That play time gives children opportunities
to explore, experiment, use their imaginations and ask questions.
Children are encouraged to contribute their own ideas and interpretations
to what they are engaged in. They learn problem solving strategies
with the materials they are working with and also with their peers.
Children also learn what they enjoy playing with and what they find
to be their least favorite.
Many parents
are concerned that their children are getting the "academics"
at preschool. To make learning meaningful at the preschool level
we need to make learning playful at an age appropriate level. Children
learn about geometry as they explore and play with blocks and puzzles.
Science is learned as children explore what happens when the ice
block in the water table begins to melt while they are playing with
the polar bears. During story time, children learn the flow of the
English language, new vocabulary and new concepts as they listen
to the teacher. Music exploration involves exposure to different
instruments, movement and songs that teach about the world around
them. Math concepts are learned by investigating sea shells and
then classifying them according to size, shape or counting them
all while children are in their swimsuits! Time for dramatic play
is important. Children use their developing language skills as they
role model what they learned from the fire fighters that come to
visit preschool. Art time gives children a variety of materials
to use and figure out how they work together as they express themselves.
A variety of large motor activities help children's bodies develop,
as well as children playing cooperatively amongst themselves.
As with any
quality early childhood educational program the teaching staff is
a critical component. The West Des Moines Christian Church Preschool
knows the importance of educated, professional teachers and assistants.
You will find our staff to be some of the best around!
